Philip Cowdell leads TSG’s consulting practice and spearheads the company’s capabilities in disinformation response and digital transformation.
Prior to TSG, he was Global President of Client Services at WPP’s GroupM, the world’s largest media planning, buying, and analytics network. In this role he guided agency teams and clients through today’s increasingly complex and fragmented media and digital landscape. He focused on the shifting dynamics of consumer behavior, and on business models and digital technology and data, with an eye to identifying and designing new ways of working to create value and mitigate risk. In addition to his agency activities, Phil is actively engaged in public sector and community initiatives. An advisor to the Obama administration on public-private partnerships to counter violent extremism from 2014 to 2016, he was invited by UK Prime Minister Theresa May to speak on social media and terrorism at the UN General Assembly in September 2017, and he briefed intelligence teams in various branches of government through 2018.
Previous U.S.-based roles include GroupM President of [m]Platform for North America. Phil ran GroupM’s digital teams across paid and organic search; paid social, programmatic, advertising operations, and campaign activation; and data and analytics services. Earlier, he was GroupM’s CEO of Mediacom for North America and worked for a private equity firm, restructuring a collection of direct response marketing agencies. He was CEO of Mindshare for North America, Global President of Media for WPP’s Ford Motor Company agency, and Worldwide Managing Partner and Global Head of Planning for Mindshare in London.
He has lived in London, Chicago, Detroit, Sydney and Guangzhou, and worked across Europe, North America, Australia, China, Southeast Asia, India and the Middle East.
He is an advisor to technology and transformation-based organizations on AI-powered facial recognition, e-sports, gamification, and urban transformation. An active believer in civic responsibility, he is involved in education and youth charities, and when Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated Puerto Rico and neighboring islands, he headed to the disaster zones with emergency supplies. His ongoing efforts have included on-the-ground support for local charities and church groups, and he has taken colleagues and NBA and NFL stars to bring supplies to Puerto Rico and play sports with over 900 children there.
Phil has been a senior advisor to Wharton’s marketing faculty, a board member of the Wharton SEI Center, and a guest lecturer at Columbia University, Wharton, Michigan State University, and the University of Montana. He graduated from the University of London, BSc Honors. Phil is British and lives in New York.
