Slick ISIS Messages Appeal to Recruits, But Moderate Muslims Can Help Fight Them, NYPD Counterterrorism Chief Says

NYPD Counterterrorism Chief John Miller said Tuesday that ISIS has grown into a global menace by employing a propaganda campaign of “almost Madison Avenue quality.”

“They’re not like the old Bin Laden films with him talking for 40 minutes, pointing his finger at the camera,” Miller said. “They’re fast moving images and stimuli. They understand that it’s not about the messenger. It’s about the message.”

Miller dissected the Islamic State’s recruiting success as part of a wide-ranging discussion with former FBI agent Ali Soufan at the Fordham University School of Law.

Miller said moderate Muslims are the key to effectively combatting the slick messaging from ISIS…
