Daniel Freedman

Director of Strategy and
Policy Analysis

Daniel Freedman is the Director of Strategy and Policy Analysis of The Soufan Group. He also serves as the Director of Policy Analysis at the Qatar International Academy for Security Studies.

Previously, Mr. Freedman worked in the U.S. Senate, as the Senior Writer for Senator Joseph Lieberman; at the United Nations, with Ann M. Veneman, the Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF; and for Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign, serving as the mayor's Foreign Policy Analyst. In this capacity he worked with Yale professor and former career diplomat Charles Hill, advising on all areas of foreign policy and managing 12 task forces of more than 80 scholars. He has also worked in the British Parliament.

Mr. Freedman is a former columnist for Forbes, and began his career as an editorial writer at the Wall Street Journal Europe and The New York Sun. His writings, on topics ranging from terrorism and international affairs to politics, theology, and sports, have appeared in many publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Post, and City Journal.

He has appeared on CNN, the BBC, and MSNBC, among other television and radio channels, and has spoken at Yale Law School, the Sciences Po (Paris), the Harvard Club (New York), and the Tate Modern Art Gallery (London).

He is the co-author of the New York Times top 10 bestseller, "The Black Banners: The Inside Story of 9/11 and the War Against al Qaeda" (WW Norton / Penguin, 2011). The book was selected by The Sunday Times as a book of the year, and received the 2012 Ridenhour Book Prize, which honors acts of truth-telling and outstanding works of social significance in publishing. The book received widespread praise, including from The Economist which described it as "one of the most valuable and detailed accounts of its subject to appear in the past decade."

He is a graduate of the London School of Economics.
