Emergency sirens rang out in Rome this morning after two small package bombs exploded at the Swiss and Chilean embassies, according to police. A similar suspicious package was sent to the Ukrainian Embassy but proved to contain no explosive material.

British Parliament Committee Invites Ali Soufan to Discuss "Roots of Radicalization" December 19, 2011 - The transcript and video of Ali Soufan's October appearance before the House of Commons' Home Affairs Committee is now available on The Soufan Group's website. Mr. Soufan was invited to give evidence on the roots of radicalization, and also discussed with MPs the so-called Arab Spring and the current situation in the Middle East.

President Obama didn't stop by Detachment 88 Headquarters during his recent visit to Indonesia, but if he had he would have gained valuable insights into strategies to defeat terrorists before they reach the battlefield. Detachment 88 is Indonesian police's counter-terrorism unit, and they've had both notable successes and failures in their efforts against the al Qaeda affiliated Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) group ? all of which provide important counter-terrorism lessons for everyone else. I spent time in the unit's offices during a trip to South-East Asia with a team from the Qatar International Academy for Security Studies (QIASS) tasked with analyzing terrorism risk reduction strategies.

Former RUC and PSNI ACC Stephen White, who now works for QIASS (Qatar International Academy for Security Studies], was a member of its project team which presented a key report Extremist Violence Risk Reduction for the 79th Interpol general assembly.

Security officials around the world need more grass-roots strategies to understand the "radicalization process" and win over extremists with brains-over-brawn outreach such as moderate clerics, said a report Monday at an Interpol gathering in Qatar. The paper - compiled by former counterterrorism experts from agencies including the CIA and FBI - urges authorities to expand traditional intelligence and investigation work to include programs that directly challenge the ideology of groups such as al-Qaida and other factions.
