CVE CoE Conference: Don Borelli Discusses Curriculum and Training Methodologies

WASHINGTON, DC – January 25, 2012 – Mr. William Dokurno, NESA Center State Department Fellow, served as moderator of the first panel this afternoon of the Conference on the Proposed International Center of Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE CoE) entitled “Lessons Learned and Good Practices in Curriculum Development and Training Methodologies.” He introduced the role training methodologies in combating extremism. Dr. Khalid Koser, Geneva Center on Security Policy, discussed the efforts of the Geneva Center to provide training to government officials on issues relating to terrorism and security. Colonel Ozden Selic of Turkey presented to the group the functions of the NATO Counterterrorism Center of Excellence in Turkey. Col. Selic shared information about how his organization has succeeded in educating government, military and academic officials on extremism and terrorism. Lastly, Mr. Don Borelli of The Soufan Group spoke of his approaches his organization has taken to counterterrorism by examining terror groups from all backgrounds, including the IRA and rightwing extremism in the US. All three presenters agreed that community policing was an important aspect of any counter-radicalization efforts but debated the ability of local police forces to conduct counterterrorism work…
